"My name is Taunacy Horton
and about two months ago I moved here to Utah from Chicago with
my six children. In June of 2004 I learned that I was pregnant
with quintuplets and two weeks after that my husband was deployed
to Iraq. My older two children were five and seven years old at
the time. As you can imagine this was a very difficult time in
my life.
I made it twenty-six weeks and delivered
my 5 little ones on October 11, 2004. All five babies were born
under two pounds but were remarkably healthy considering their
odds. Just three days before the babies were delivered I was notified
that my husband had been gravely injured in a mortar attack and
lay in a coma in Germany. As I prayed for my husbands recovery,
struggled to take care of my older two children and spend as much
time as possible at the hospital with the babies.
I soon found myself dealing with the most
devastating loss I could of imagined. Unexpectedly on the morning
of October 30, 2004 the largest and the healthiest of the quintuplets,
Addyson, passed away from an infection at nineteen days old.
While planning my daughters funeral one
of the most frequent comments I would get was that I should take
comfort in the fact that I had four more babies and two older
children so my loss shouldn't be as hard. I hope through sharing
my experience that others will understand how false this comment
is.
What I want people to know most about
me is that I am an ordinary person who has had to deal with exta-ordinary
circumstances. I will always be the mother of quintuplets and
along my journey have seen and learned that out of the deepest
grief can come the greatest joys. "
